Dr Dawn Recommends: August Edition

August is National Dog Month, so this month, I thought I would focus on dog related products. Here we go …

Bugalugs

A girlfriend recently introduced me to Bugalugs and I, and our dogs, have become overnight fans. The company was set up just six years ago and has become the UK’s bestselling pet care brand. It is stocked in Asda, Sainsbury’s, Pets at Home, Waitrose, Jollyes, Just for Pets, The Range, Boots, Bunnings Warehouse and Pets & Friends and is also successful in over 90 countries world-wide.

Our four Jack Russell Terriers are prone to plaque build-up, so I am a particular fan of the Plaque Remover – a 100% natural food topper made from hand-harvested Irish seaweed. It supports dental health in two ways – its natural texture provides a gentle brushing action while chewing, and when mixed with saliva, it creates an enzymatic reaction that helps break down plaque and tartar.

We also love the Dental Water Additive. We just add one capful to the water bowls each day. It’s tasteless and odourless, making it easy to use, while helping to reduce plaque and tartar build-up, freshen breath, and support healthy gums and teeth. Made with natural ingredients including green tea leaf extract and citric acid.

The dogs favourite though has to be the ore and probiotic chews! They have a huge range. Check out www.bugalugspetcare.com

Poorly Paws

Poorly Paws began after the owners’ dog sliced her paw open on broken glass while out walking. That accident inspired the development of a portable first aid kit for dogs. And the company has gone on to develop a 24/7 veterinary support line. For just £4.99 a month, you can have 24-hour access to qualified professionals who can tell you whether your dog needs urgent care or advise you on home care. The website also has useful videos on canine first aid and

if you sign up to their newsletter, they offer a 10% discount. Check out www.poorlypaws.com

Healthspan

I first met the team at Healthspan over twenty years ago when I visited their headquarters in Guernsey. I was very impressed by the company and have often recommended their supplements to patients, so was thrilled to hear they have expanded in to pet care with their VetsVits. Many of you may recognise their vet Dr Scott Miller who is resident vet on ITV’s This Morning. He has over 25 years of experience caring for animals of all shapes and sizes. Whatever the health issue for your dog (or cat), check out www.vetsvits.co.uk and if you sign up, you will be offered 15% off your first order.

Pet Head

I also like this company who produce high quality grooming products that are gentle on your pet’s skin and coat. One of our Jack Russells often has crusting around her eyes and their pet wipes are just the job for gently cleaning her eyes.

Company of Animals

The Company of Animals started in 1979 and now their products are stocked in thousands of independent pet shops all around the world and online. I love their ethos – everything they do revolves around improving the happiness of our pets. The company is led by well known TV personality Dr Roger Mugford who has written books on animal behaviour and they have a “Pet Centre” at the headquarters in Surrey which has helped train literally thousands of dogs.
