Dr Dawn Recommends: Valentine’s Day

As it’s February and Valentine’s is looming, I thought I would focus on a few quality treats this month. So, whether you are looking for something a little special for yourself, a partner or a family member, I really like these little indulgences.

Peter Alexander

Peter Alexander has been dubbed the “Pyjama King” by the Australian media and I can see why. A girlfriend gave me a set of his satin touch PJs and I love them. I also love the history behind this brand. Peter struggled with dyslexia at school. In fact. In the early years, there was nothing to suggest that he would become an internationally renowned fashion designer. He started making ladies pyjamas on his mother’s dining room table and went on to travel around the country with a suitcase of samples trying to sell to department stores and boutiques. On his first appointment he was told to go away and “get a proper job”. I, for one, am glad he didn’t! Every year, Peter does a range of products donating all profits to the RSPCA.

Arena Flowers

Arena Flowers were founded in 2006 and since then they have delivered more than 10 million beautiful bouquets all across the UK. They now also deliver internationally, but what I love about these bespoke bouquets is that sustainability is at the heart of everything they do, to the extent that they plant two trees for every bouquet they make. They have been ranked the UKs most ethical flower delivery company for the last 8 years. Those of you that know me, will know I love charity support, so the fact that they support a different charity each year ticks another box for me. In 2026 they will be partnering with Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

They have kindly offered a 20% discount code on purchases over £30 using code DRDAWNVALENTINES20 valid until midnight on 15th February 2026.

Gower Chocolate Brownies

It may seem strange for a doctor to recommend chocolate, but I have always believed there is no such thing as a bad food, there are just plenty of bad diets. There is nothing wrong with chocolate as a treat. It is only a problem if it becomes part of your daily routine. So, as a luxury, I love Gower Cottage Brownies. My mum was brought up in South Wales, so I have fond memories of that part of the world growing up and actually made it my business to learn a bit of Welsh over the years. As you may guess these award-winning handcrafted brownies are made in a bakery in the scenic Gower in South Wales using the finest quality ingredients.

In fact, the BBC Good Food Magazine say they are “the best brownies we have ever tasted”. I am inclined to agree with them!
